Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is the founder of the Art of Living Foundation (1981) and the International Association for Human Values (1997). The Art of Living Foundation is now one of the world’s largest volunteer-based educational and humanitarian organizations. Born in 1956 in Papanasam, India, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar studied with many renowned spiritual masters and became a scholar of Vedic Literature. By the age of seventeen, he obtained an Advanced Degree in Modern Physics, and later received an Honorary Doctorate from Kuvempu University, Karnataka, India. This unassuming humanitarian from India has dedicated his life to a violence-free global family, transcending the boundaries of religion, nationality, race, caste and language. Since an early age, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has been championing the cause of the underprivileged and the marginalised sections of society. The innovative programmes he has devised and the immense social work he has undertaken stem from his commitment to a rejuvenation of human values, a violence-free society and to enable people to lead happier, healthier, stress-free lives. He is probably today, the single-most multi-faceted activist on the globe: His humanitarian initiatives include combating terrorism in Kashmir, transforming extremists from the North East of India, Bihar and Andra Pradesh, working towards ending the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, establishing schools for children from the underprivileged and marginalised sections of society and creating a forum for dialogue between leaders of all religious and political ideologies; trauma relief in times of calamities such as the South-East Tsunami, the Gujarat earthquake, the floods in Indonesia etc. Through the Art of Living Foundation and International Association of Human Values, another organisation founded by him, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has brought peace and joy to billions of people in over 150 countries. Touching upon every section of society and addressing every aspect required to build a violence-free society, Sri Sri’s work covers the areas of conflict resolution, trauma relief and disaster management, stress elimination, empowering individuals and communities and revival of ancient wisdom. |
